Drumming Competition, Festival de la Mejorana

Among the most important events of the National Folkloric Festival of La Mejorana are the performance competitions for instruments such as the accordion, the drum, and the mejorana guitar. The drumming contest has the name of the late Gumersindo Diaz, a virtuoso drummer. The Panamanian percusion instruments are the repicador y and the pujador (two drums of high and low tones, respectively), la caja (another drum), and the guacharaca or güiro. These instruments (with the exception of the guacharaca) accompany female voices and clapping during el tamborito dance and the accordion in other Panamanian musical forms.
